Signs that gambling might be a problem
Problem gambling can creep up quietly. It isn't about how much you bet — it's about the effect it's having on your life. Common warning signs include:
- Spending more money or time gambling than you meant to, or than you can afford.
- Chasing losses — betting more to try to win back what you've lost.
- Borrowing money, selling things or missing bills to gamble.
- Gambling to escape stress, boredom, loneliness or low mood.
- Lying to family or friends about how much you gamble.
- Feeling restless or irritable when you try to cut back or stop.
- Arguments at home, or work and study slipping, because of gambling.
- Feeling guilt, anxiety or shame after a session.

Tools that keep you in control
Every site we recommend gives you built-in tools to stay in charge of your play. You'll usually find them under "Responsible Gambling", "Limits" or your account settings. Set them before you start, when you're thinking clearly.
- Deposit limits. Cap how much you can add to your account per day, week or month. This is the single most effective control — decide your budget and lock it in.
- Loss limits. Set a maximum you're prepared to lose over a period, so a bad run can't spiral.
- Wager and bet limits. Some sites let you cap total stakes or the size of a single bet.
- Time limits and session reminders. Limit how long you can play, and get a nudge to log off.
- Reality checks. A pop-up at intervals you choose that shows how long you've been playing and whether you're up or down — a simple way to break the "just one more" trance.
- Time-outs. Take a short break — 24 hours, a week, a month — where you can't log in. Good for a reset without closing your account.
A simple rule of thumb. Only gamble with money you can genuinely afford to lose, set a deposit limit before you play, never chase losses, and don't gamble to deal with stress or to try to fix money problems. If it stops being fun, stop.
Self-exclusion
If you want to stop for a longer period, self-exclusion blocks you from an account for months or years. There are two levels to think about:
- Operator self-exclusion. Every site we recommend lets you self-exclude directly. Once set, they must close access for the chosen period and stop marketing to you. This is the fastest option for one specific site.
- Multi-operator options in NZ. Excluding from one site won't stop the others, so if online gambling has become a problem, combine self-exclusion with a broader step — a time-out or exclusion across every site you use, blocking gambling transactions with your bank where that's offered, installing gambling-blocking software on your devices, and talking to a support service that can help you set up a wider plan. New Zealand also operates a multi-venue exclusion scheme for land-based venues through the Department of Internal Affairs and local providers.
